Practical Care

Ten small swaps for a lighter household

No guilt, no lectures — just ten practical changes members of the committee have actually made, roughly in order of ease.

Ten small swaps for a lighter household

When we surveyed the committee about changes we’ve made at home, a pattern emerged: the ones that stuck were small, cheap, and boring. Here are ten, roughly in order of ease.

1. Cold-water wash for most laundry. 2. A dish towel where the paper towels used to sit. 3. LED bulbs as the old ones burn out. 4. One or two meatless dinners a week. 5. A library card workout instead of one-click ordering. 6. Combining errands into a single loop. 7. A programmable thermostat, actually programmed. 8. A rain barrel under one downspout. 9. Keeping the car another year. 10. Talking about it — kindly — at church.

None of these will save the world alone. Together, practiced by a congregation, they begin to look like a witness.
